Pittsburgh Steelers Merchandise and Pittsburgh Memorabilia
When it comes to the Super Bowl, there's no team that can match the
Pittsburgh Steelers. They recorded their record-setting sixth Super
Bowl victory in 2009, edging the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.
It marked the Steelers' sixth Super Bowl win in seven appearances.
Pittsburgh is one of four teams in the AFC North Division. Originally
called the Pirates, the Steelers wear uniforms of black and gold. The
team, which formerly played at Three Rivers Stadium, now calls Heinz
Field its home. The Pittsburgh Pirates football team was founded in
1933 by Art Rooney, who named the team after the Steel City's National
League baseball team. The two franchises shared Pittsburgh's Forbes
Field, with the football team changing its name to Steelers in 1940. In
the 1970s, head coach Chuck Noll put together a well-balanced offense
starring quarterback Terry Bradshaw, running back Franco Harris, center
Mike Webster, and wide receivers John Stallworth and Lynn Swann, all of
whom are in the Hall of Fame. The defense, known as the Steel Curtain
because it closed tightly on opposing offenses, featured future Hall of
Fame linebackers Jack Ham and Jack Lambert; defensive backs Mel Blount
and Donnie Shell; and linemen Joe Greene, L. C. Greenwood, and Dwight
White. Fielding the AFC's top-rated defense, the Steelers triumphed in
Super Bowls IX, X, XIII and XIV. Bill Cowher was hired as head coach in
1992 and built solid teams in the early 1990s leading to an appearance
in Super Bowl XXX. The 2005 Steelers (still under Cowher) and the 2008
squad (under coach Mike Tomlin), returned to the limelight for Super
Bowls XL and XLIII, winning both with standout players including
quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, wide receivers Hines Ward and Santonio
Holmes, and running backs Jerome Bettis and Willie Parker.
