New York Mets Memorabilia

New York Mets

New York City, the largest city in the U.S. gained entrance into the National League™ in 1962 when the New York Mets™ were born and played their first of two seasons in the Polo Grounds. The 2012 season marks the 50th anniversary of a team that has been known as everything from lovable losers to World Series™ champions. The Mets™ and losing were synonymous during the franchise's first seven years, during which they dropped 100-plus games five times. One “victory” stands out during this era, however. The Mets won a special lottery for the rights to USC pitcher and future Hall of Famer Tom Seaver in 1966; three years later, they were World Series champions. Among the heroes were World Series MVP Donn Clendenon and pitcher Jerry Koosman. Returning to postseason play in 1973, New York captured the East Division crown before edging the Cincinnati Reds™ 3-2 in an NLCS™ in which Rusty Staub hit all three of the Mets' homers. Staub (.423, 6 RBI) excelled again in the World Series championship, but the Mets fell 4-3 to the Oakland A's™. Following a dry spell, the Mets returned with a vengeance in 1986. Winning 108 regular-season games – thanks to Darryl Strawberry, Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, Mookie Wilson, Bobby Ojeda and others – they knocked off the Houston Astros™ 4-2 in the NLCS. The Boston Red Sox™ seemingly had control in Game 6 of the World Series, but the Mets pulled off an amazing comeback, then won Game 7 and their second World Series title. Ray Knight took home World Series MVP honors with a .391 average and five RBI. The Mets claimed the East Division title in 1988 and earned Wild Card berths in 1999 and 2000, falling in the 2000 World Series to the New York Yankees™. Posting the best Senior Circuit record in 2006, the Mets were edged in a seven-game NLCS by the St. Louis Cardinals™. The Mets finished second in the East in both 2007 and 2008, and moved into in 2009. Mets fans are hoping for a return to the glory days in 2012.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Whether based on the East Coast or the West Coast, the Dodgers have been one of the most successful teams in baseball history. On 24 occasions, the Dodgers have qualified for the postseason, and their 20th century win total was third behind only the New York Yankees and New York/San Francisco Giants. The Bridegrooms, as they were then known, won their first National League pennant in 1890.  Now called the Superbas and featuring stars such as Hughie Jennings, Joe Kelly and Willie Keeler, the club claimed another pair of pennants in 1899 and 1900. The team name was changed to the Dodgers and a move to Ebbets Field occurred in 1913. Jack Pfeffer won 25 games in 1916 while Burleigh Brimes posted 23 wins in 1920, but the Robins (another name change) lost the World Series both years.  Brooklyn captured an N.L. flag in 1941 with Dolf Camilli belting 34 homers and driving in 120 runs, Pete Reiser leading the league in batting (.343), and Kirby Higbe and Whit Wyatt winning 22 games each.  But the first in a parade of Fall Classic losses to the Yankees followed. Breaking the color barrier in 1947 was Jackie Robinson, followed by the Dodgers winning six pennants and a World Series over the next 10 years. Pitcher Don Newcombe, outfielder Duke Snider and first baseman Gil Hodges were among the many heroes in this golden era.  In 1955, Roy Campanella corralled his third Most Valuable Player award and the Dodgers finally knocked off the Yankees in the World Series. A move to the West Coast in 1958 was followed the next season by the Dodgers garnering the pennant and defeating the Chicago White Sox in the World Series.  Sandy Koufax won 25 games in 1963 and starred in a World Series sweep of the Yankees, then combined with Don Drysdale to win 49 games and another Fall Classic in 1965. In 1988, Orel Hershiser won 23 games and pitched 59 consecutive scoreless innings on the way to a World Series conquest of Oakland. The turning point in this series was Kirk Gibson's dramatic pinch-hit homer to win Game 1. Thrilling the Los Angeles faithful over the next couple of decades were Hideo Nomo, Mike Piazza, Kevin Brown, Gary Sheffield and Shawn Green. Eric Gagne saved 55 games in 2003 to earn the Cy Young Award, and in 2006 the Dodgers claimed a Wild Card berth for their 24th postseason appearance.

From the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, there were few teams better than the Philadelphia Phillies.

From the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, there were few teams better than the Philadelphia Phillies. Perennial winners of the National League East Division, the Phillies captured two pennants and earned a World Series title during that span. Organized in 1883, the Phillies fielded some incredible talent during the late 1800s, including future Hall of Fame outfielders Ed Delahanty, Billy Hamilton and Sam Thompson. Pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander posted 31 wins and crafted a 1.22 ERA in 1915 as the Phillies grabbed their first N.L. flag.  Right fielder Gavvy Cravath claimed home run and RBI titles that season. Alexander came back with 33 wins in 1916 and they finished second two years running.  The club fell on hard times for the next several decades, despite the stellar play of Chuck Klein, Lefty O'Doul and Cy Williams.  Following five consecutive last-place finishes (1938-42), a successful rebuilding program featured stars Del Ennis, Richie Ashburn and Robin Roberts. Finally in 1950, the Whiz Kids outlasted Brooklyn for the pennant on the last-game heroics of Dick Sisler and Ashburn before being swept by the New York Yankees in the World Series. With Steve Carlton mowing down hitters and Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski providing the power, the Phillies began their greatest era with an East Division crown in 1976. The club also corralled division titles in 1977, 1978 and 1980, finally winning the NLCS over Houston in '80 and bouncing Kansas City in a six-game World Series. Among the heroes on this title team were senior circuit MVP Schmidt (48 homers, 121 RBI) and Cy Young Award winner Carlton (24 wins). Pitcher Curt Schilling reached the 300-strikeout plateau in both 1997 and '98, the club improved by 21 games from 2000 to 2001, and players including Pat Burrell, Bobby Abreu and Jim Thome kept the Phils in contention. After narrowly missing a Wild Card berth the past two seasons, the Phillies are anxious for a return to the postseason.

St. Louis Cardinals

With 18 Pennants and eleven World Series Championships to their credit, the St. Louis Cardinals are the greatest team in National League history.  Many of baseball's most talented players and interesting characters have worn Cardinals™ uniforms, and their on-field performances and off-field exploits have kept St. Louis fans entertained through the decades. The team that would eventually be known as the Cardinals was organized in 1881.  The following year, this Brown Stockings ballclub (also known as the Browns) became a charter member of the American Association.  Among the squad's early stars were first baseman Charlie Comiskey, third baseman Arlie Latham and pitchers Jumbo McGinnis and Tony Mullane. By 1885, the Browns were clearly the class of the American Association, thanks to players such as outfielder Tip O'Neill and pitchers "Parisian Bob" Caruthers and Dave Foutz.  St. Louis won four consecutive league titles (1885-88), tied the Chicago White Stockings in the 1885 World Series and defeated the White Stockings in the 1886 World Series. Now known as the Cardinals, the team joined the National League in 1892. Following years of dominance by Rogers Hornsby, Jim Bottomley led the Cardinals to senior circuit Pennants in 1926 and 1928, with the '26 squad claiming the World Series Championship.  Chick Hafey, Frankie Frisch and Bill Hallahan guided the Cardinals to Pennants in 1930 and '31, and a Fall Classic triumph the latter year.  Dubbed the "Gashouse Gang" for their unruly behavior and daring play, the 1934 Cardinals featuring Pepper Martin, Joe "Ducky" Medwick, Rip Collins and Dizzy Dean captured another World Series title. The Cardinals won four Pennants and three World Series in a five-year span during the 1940s with stars such as Stan Musial and Enos Slaughter, then earned three Pennants and two Fall Classics in the 1960s with standouts including Bob Gibson and Lou Brock. Ozzie Smith and Willie McGee led the way to a ninth World Championship in 1982, while Albert Pujols and Chris Carpenter helped secure two more crowns in 2006 and 2011.

Denver Broncos Merchandise

Denver Broncos Merchandise

Most NFL teams can point to one or two decades in which they've excelled.  Since entering the NFL in 1970, the Denver Broncos have posted impressive results in all four decades.  Along the way, they've made 17 playoff appearances, captured 10 division titles, earned six conference championships and won two Super Bowls.  The Broncos were a charter member of the American Football League in 1960, and while they enjoyed little success, they did win the first-ever AFL game (over the Patriots in 1960) and became the first AFL team to defeat an NFL team (over the Lions in a 1967 preseason game).  Running back Floyd Little was the star of this era.  Denver began fielding strong teams in the mid-1970s, garnering its first AFC West Division crown in 1977 under coach Red Miller.  A punishing defense was anchored by end Lyle Alzado, linebacker Randy Gradishar and cornerback Louis Wright, while quarterback Craig Morton piloted a steady offense.  As a rookie quarterback, John Elway guided the Broncos to a playoff berth in 1983 and 13 victories in 1984.  Receiver Steve Watson and running back Sammy Winder each enjoyed 1,000-yard seasons the latter year, and the AFC's top defense included linebacker Karl Mecklenburg and safety Dennis Smith.  The Broncos (5-11 in 1990) staged the most dramatic improvement in team history in 1991, posting a 12-4 mark under coach Dan Reeves.  During the mid-1990s, Denver remained a power as the offense added tight end Shannon Sharpe and wide receiver Anthony Miller, as well as running back Terrell Davis.  Mike Shanahan became the Broncos head coach before the 1995 season, and a year later he guided Denver to 13 regular-season wins and an AFC West title.  Denver won back-to-back Super Bowls (XXXII and XXXIII) and qualified for the playoffs four times in six years (2000-05).

If there's one thing Minnesota Vikings fans have been able to count on through the decades

If there's one thing Minnesota Vikings fans have been able to count on through the decades, it's playoff football.  The Vikings have made 25 post-season appearances since 1968 when they claimed the first of their 17 division titles, and competed in four Super Bowls.  Fans knew there was something special about this franchise when the Vikings upset Chicago 37-13 in 1961 at Metropolitan Stadium in their first NFL game.  Fran Tarkenton came off the bench to pass for four touchdowns in the game that jump-started this new team.  Minnesota enjoyed its first winning season in 1964 (8-5-1), captured the Western Conference's Central Division in 1968 and enjoyed a 12-game winning streak in 1969 on the way to an NFL championship and its first Super Bowl berth.  In 1971, Alan Page became the first defensive player named the league's MVP, and four years later Tarkenton earned the same award.  Following the 1976 season, the Vikings advanced to the Super Bowl for the third time in four years, all under head coach Bud Grant. Claiming the division crown for the sixth consecutive year and 10th time in 11 seasons in 1978, Minnesota captured another division crown in 1980, then moved into the Metrodome in 1982.  Tarkenton and Page were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986 and 1988, respectively.  The 1998 club under coach Dennis Green established a franchise record with 15 wins, but a devastating overtime loss to Atlanta in the NFC championship contest ended the dream season.  The Vikings came back to win the division in 2000, advancing to the conference title game for the second time in three years. Quarterback Daunte Culpepper set an NFL record in 2004 by amassing 5,123 total yards and threw a team-record 39 TD passes.  In 2008, Adrian Peterson rushed for an NFL-high 1,760 yards to lead Minnesota to its 17th division crown.

Shop for Dallas Cowboys merchandise, Dallas Cowboys gifts and Dallas Cowboys memorabilia at the HighlandMint.com

One of the most successful franchises in NFL history, the Dallas Cowboys have appeared in eight Super Bowls - tied for first with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  The Cowboys won five of those games, tied with the San Francisco 49ers for second most Super Bowl wins in NFL annals.  Dallas has also earned 21 division titles and made 30 playoff appearances through the 2011 season.  Tom Landry, one of the winningest coaches in professional football history, led the club to two Super Bowl victories during the 1970s (VI and XII), with teams starring safety Mel Renfro, quarterback Roger Staubach and the famed Doomsday Defense.  Other Dallas standouts during this period included several future Hall of Fame members, including running back Tony Dorsett and wide receivers Tony Hill and Drew Pearson.  On defense, end Ed "Too Tall" Jones and tackle Randy White, also a future Hall of Famer, were two of the era's most feared pass-rushers.  The team won three Super Bowls in a four-year span during the early to mid-1990s, with lineups featuring quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith and wide receiver Michael Irvin.  The Cowboys qualified for the postseason in 1999 for the ninth time in 10 years.  Dallas also made it into the playoffs in 2003 (10-6), 2006 (9-7), 2007 (13-3) and 2009 (11-5), but won only one playoff game.  Quincy Carter passed for 3,302 yards for the 2003 team.  In 2006, Julius Jones rushed for 1,084 yards, Terry Glenn and Terrell Owens combined for 2,227 receiving yards, DeMarcus Ware recorded 11.5 sacks, and Roy Williams made five interceptions.  Tony Romo passed for 4,211 yards and 36 TDs, Jason Witten and Owens combined for 2,500 yards receiving and 22 TDs, Greg Ellis and Ware combined for 26.5 sacks, and Anthony Henry and Ken Hamlin combined for 11 interceptions in 2007.  The 2009 team featured Romo (4,483 yards passing), Miles Austin and Witten (combined 2,350 receiving yards), Ware (11 sacks), and Mike Jenkins (5 interceptions).

New England Patriots Store | New England Patriots Shop | Patriots Merchandise

Since the turn of the century, the New England Patriots have been the NFL's most dominant team.  The Pats produced a 134-42 regular-season record from 2001 to 2011, winning nine AFC East Division titles, and compiled a 16-6 mark in the postseason, including three wins in five Super Bowl appearances.  A charter member of the American Football League in 1960, the then-Boston Patriots captured an Eastern Division championship in 1963, with quarterback Babe Parilli, fullback Larry Garron and cornerback Bob Suci leading the way.  Twenty-two years later, New England (11-5) earned its first AFC championship before bowing to Chicago in Super Bowl XX.  Standouts included quarterback Tony Eason, halfback Craig James, wide receiver Stanley Morgan and guard John Hannah.  The team made four playoff appearances between 1994 and '98, with signal-caller Drew Bledsoe leading the NFL in passing yards (4,555) in '94, running back Curtis Martin pacing the AFC in rushing yards (1,487) in '95 and Ty Law topping the league in interceptions (9) in '98.  The Patriots captured the 1996 AFC championship before falling to Green Bay in Super Bowl XXXI.  Named head coach in 2000, Bill Belichick quickly built a dynasty.  Quarterback Tom Brady led the Pats to the 2001 AFC crown and a victory over St. Louis in Super Bowl XXXVI, then earned Super Bowl MVP honors for the second time in three years when New England defeated Carolina in Super Bowl XXXVIII.  In 2004, the Patriots won their third NFL crown in four years, knocking off Philadelphia in Super Bowl XXXIX on the strength of game MVP Deion Branch's 133 receiving yards.  New England completed the first-ever 16-0 regular-season campaign in 2007 - losing Super Bowl XLII to the New York Giants - then extended their NFL-record regular-season winning streak to 21 games in 2008. New England fell to the Giants in Super Bowl XLVI following the 2011 season.

Pittsburgh Steelers Merchandise and Pittsburgh Memorabilia

Pittsburgh Steelers Merchandise and Pittsburgh Memorabilia

When it comes to the Super Bowl, there's no team that can match the Pittsburgh Steelers.  They recorded their record-setting sixth Super Bowl victory in 2009, edging the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.  It marked the Steelers' sixth Super Bowl win in seven appearances.  Pittsburgh is one of four teams in the AFC North Division.  Originally called the Pirates, the Steelers wear uniforms of black and gold.  The team, which formerly played at Three Rivers Stadium, now calls Heinz Field its home.  The Pittsburgh Pirates football team was founded in 1933 by Art Rooney, who named the team after the Steel City's National League baseball team.  The two franchises shared Pittsburgh's Forbes Field, with the football team changing its name to Steelers in 1940.  In the 1970s, head coach Chuck Noll put together a well-balanced offense starring quarterback Terry Bradshaw, running back Franco Harris, center Mike Webster, and wide receivers John Stallworth and Lynn Swann, all of whom are in the Hall of Fame.  The defense, known as the Steel Curtain because it closed tightly on opposing offenses, featured future Hall of Fame linebackers Jack Ham and Jack Lambert; defensive backs Mel Blount and Donnie Shell; and linemen Joe Greene, L. C. Greenwood, and Dwight White.  Fielding the AFC's top-rated defense, the Steelers triumphed in Super Bowls IX, X, XIII and XIV.  Bill Cowher was hired as head coach in 1992 and built solid teams in the early 1990s leading to an appearance in Super Bowl XXX.  The 2005 Steelers (still under Cowher) and the 2008 squad (under coach Mike Tomlin), returned to the limelight for Super Bowls XL and XLIII, winning both with standout players including quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, wide receivers Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes, and running backs Jerome Bettis and Willie Parker.

Clemson University Tigers

Clemson University

Clemson University Tigers
STADIUM: Memorial Stadium
EST DATE : 1896

The Clemson football program has enjoyed consecutive winning seasons 11 times in the past 12 years entering the 2012 campaign, reminding fans of the glory years of the 1980s. During that incredible decade, the Tigers posted an 87-25-4 composite record and were the fifth winningest Division I team. A 12-0 record in 1981, including a victory over No. 4 Nebraska in the Orange Bowl, gave the school its only national championship. Atlantic Coast Conference titles were earned in 1981, ’82, ’86, ’87, ’88, '91 and 2011, and the Tigers won 10 games in each of four straight years (1987-90) and five consecutive bowl games following the 1986-90 seasons. Overall, Clemson has earned 18 conference titles and two division championships (2009 and 2011), and has won 16 bowl games. The Tigers began playing football in 1896 and had its first undefeated season and claimed its first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association title in 1900. Clemson garnered Southern Conference championships in 1940 and 1948, posting an 11-0 mark in the latter year. The team was stellar again in the late 1950s, going 38-13-2 from 1955-59, and again in the late 1970s, with a 27-8-1 mark from 1977-79. Thirteen times Clemson has been ranked among the top 12 in the final AP poll. The Tigers play their home games at 80,301-seat Memorial Stadium, which opened in 1942. Clemson has a winning percentage of over .710 at “Death Valley,” which witnessed a record attendance of 86,092 for a 1999 game against Florida State. A memorial to the Clemson service personnel killed while on military duty was dedicated outside Gate 1 in April 2010.

Florida State Seminoles

Florida State Seminoles

STADIUM: Doak Campbell Stadium

From 1987 through 2000, Florida State University fielded a football team that was second to none. The Seminoles posted an incredible 152-19-1 record during those 14 seasons, captured two national championships, finished among the top five in the Associated Press poll each year, garnered nine Atlantic Coast Conference titles, won 11 bowl games and produced two Heisman Trophy winners. Featuring a 12-1 season in which Florida State led the nation in scoring offense and defense before edging Nebraska 18-16 in the Orange Bowl, the school's first national crown was earned in 1993. The second title (1999) included a 12-0 campaign, highlighted by a 46-29 Sugar Bowl victory over Virginia Tech that made the Seminoles the first team in AP poll history to go wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in the country. Beginning just before the start of the 20th century, the Florida State football program was discontinued in 1905 when the school became an all-women's college. FSU went co-ed again after World War II, with football resuming in 1947. The gridiron team has won 15 conference titles, three division crowns and 25 of 41 bowl games (including the last four) through the 2011 season. The Seminoles have won nine-plus games in three of the last four seasons. Doak Campbell Stadium, home to the Seminoles, opened with a 40-7 triumph over Randolph-Macon College on October 7, 1950. It has a capacity of 82,300 (highest in the ACC) and is the largest continuous brick structure in the U.S. A record crowd of 84,392 witnessed a game there against Oklahoma September 17, 2011.

Major League Baseball

Major League Baseball

Major League Baseball (MLB) has been one of the most popular sports entities in the United States for its entire existence. The first recognized professional baseball team -- the Cincinnati Red Stockings -- was established in 1869, and the first official MLB game was played on April 22, 1876, at the Jefferson Street Grounds in Philadelphia. Also in 1876, the National League (N.L.) was founded, while the American League (A.L.) was established in 1901. Other major leagues whose records and statistics are included with those of the N.L. and A.L. are the long-defunct Union Association (1884), American Association (1882-91), Players League (1890) and Federal League (1914-15). From 1903 to 1960, the N.L. and A.L. consisted of eight teams each. The relocation and expansion era had actually begun in 1953 when the Boston Braves became the Milwaukee Braves. The next season, the St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore to become the Orioles, and in 1955, the Philadelphia Athletics became the Kansas City Athletics. The most noteworthy moves came in 1958 when the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants moved across the country to become the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. A Dodgers player who had retired two years earlier was Jackie Robinson, who in 1947 had broken the color barrier and won the MLB Rookie of the Year award. From 1969, when MLB expanded into Canada to establish the Montreal Expos, to 1993, both the N.L. and A.L. consisted of East and West divisions. Since 1994, the leagues have had East, Central and West divisions. There are currently 30 teams in MLB, with 16 in the N.L. and 14 in the A.L. In 2013, the Houston Astros are slated to move from the N.L. Central Division to the A.L. West Division, which will even out the leagues at 15 teams each. Regular-season interleague play has been conducted since 1997, and the most recent expansion (Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Devil Rays) occurred the next season. Teams now play 162 regular-season games each, followed by the Division Series, League Championship Series and World Series. Another high-profile MLB event is the annual All-Star Game, pitting representatives of the N.L. versus the A.L. since 1933. The Highland Mint produces a vast array of products licensed by MLB for all 30 teams. Included are PhotoMints, Coins, Coin Cards, Etched Acrylics, Ornaments, Keychains, and framed tickets, coins and lineup cards. Selected PhotoMints include game-used items, including pieces of jerseys, bases and on-deck circles.

New York Giants

In 1925, New York City sports enthusiast Tim Mara paid $500 for an NFL franchise.  Nearly 85 years later, the Giants had won seven league championships, 10 conference crowns and 15 division titles, while making 30 playoff appearances.  Success came quickly as the 1927 team featuring Jack McBride and Hinkey Haines posted an 11-1-1 record to win the NFL championship.  With players such as Harry Newman, Ken Strong, Ed Danowski, Tuffy Leemans, Hank Soar and Mel Hein leading the way, New York added league titles in the 1934 and '38.  The Giants competed in three NFL title bouts in the 1950s - winning in 1956 - through the play of Frank Gifford, Charlie Conerly, Kyle Rote, Mel Triplett, Alex Webster, Emlen Tunnell, Pat Summerall and Jimmy Patton.  Quarterback Y.A. Tittle earned league MVP honors in 1963.  During the 1980s, New York advanced to the playoffs five times and won Super Bowl XXI over Denver.  Team leaders included 1986 NFL MVP Lawrence Taylor, Phil Simms, Joe Morris, Mark Bavaro and Leonard Marshall.  Four years later, the Giants captured their sixth NFL championship with a 20-19 victory over Buffalo in Super Bowl XXV.  This team was sparked by Simms, Taylor, Ottis Anderson and Everson Walls.  New York also competed in Super Bowl XXXV following the 2000 season, losing to Baltimore, after being led by Kerry Collins, Tiki Barber, Amani Toomer, Michael Strahan, Keith Hamilton and Emmanuel McDaniel.  More postseason appearances occurred in 2002, '05 and '06, but it was the 2007 season that will be remembered vividly by New York fans.  The Giants won three road playoff games before upsetting previously unbeaten New England 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII.  Stars of this squad included Eli Manning, Brandon Jacobs, Plaxico Burress and Osi Umenyiora.

San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl Ticket and Game Coin Collection Framed

San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers, one of four teams in the NFC West. The 49ers play in Monster Park (formerly Candlestick Park), renamed for its corporate sponsor. The team, which takes its name from the gold rushers who flooded California in the late 1840s, wears jerseys of scarlet and gold.

Few NFL teams can boast the individual stars and strong teams that made the 49ers a dominant power in the 1980s and 1990s. While on their way to capturing five Super Bowl titles, the 49ers fielded such players as running back Roger Craig, wide receiver Jerry Rice, defensive end Fred Dean, and quarterbacks Joe Montana and Steve Young. Earlier stars include Hall of Fame members quarterback Y. A. Tittle and running backs Joe "The Jet" Perry and Hugh McElhenny.

The arrival of head coach Dick Nolan in 1968, the development of a sophisticated defense and the experience of quarterback John Brodie helped San Francisco reach the playoffs for three straight seasons beginning in 1970. In 1979, new head coach Bill Walsh and a brash rookie quarterback from Notre Dame named Montana ushered in an era of unprecedented stability and success for the 49ers. Two years after the team posted a league-worst 2-14 record, Walsh won coach of the year honors for steering San Francisco to 13 regular season wins and a victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI. Carrying San Francisco into the Super Bowl was a last-minute touchdown pass from Montana to Dwight Clark that resulted in an NFC championship; it became known in football history as "The Catch." George Seifert, the 49ers defensive coordinator since 1983, became head coach in 1989 and the second rookie head coach in NFL history to lead a team to the Super Bowl. Under Seifert's leadership, Montana had his best season ever, winning an NFL Most Valuable Player award, his second of two league passing championships, and his league-record third Super Bowl MVP award.

Steve Young took over for Montana as San Francisco's starting quarterback in 1991, capturing the NFL passing title for the first of a league-record four consecutive times. Young's streak culminated in a Super Bowl XXIX victory over the San Diego Chargers, and his 112.8 passer rating in 1994 broke Montana's league mark.
